My name is Laura Nankee, and I would like to welcome you to St. Mary Child Care Center! I am the Assistant Program Director. I started working here in 2016. I have previously worked as the Lead Teacher in Room 8 (Preschool) and in Room 9 (Kindergarten Readiness).
I started out at Schoolcraft College to earn my Associates in the Arts, and later transferred to Eastern Michigan University where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education for the Hearing Impaired and Elementary Education. In 2015, I completed my Master in Arts for Teaching (M.A.T.) in Early Childhood Education at Madonna University. While I was completing my Master’s Degree at Madonna University, my Professor took our class on a tour of St. Mary Child Care Center. I was so impressed with what I saw. So when the opportunity came for me to teach here, I jumped at it!
I have been a certified teacher in the State of Michigan for over ten years, and have taught in many different classrooms. Some of my most memorable experiences were teaching a class of eight 4th and 5th grade boys in a hearing impaired classroom in Redford Union Public Schools, potty training and leading a classroom of 2 ½ to 3 year olds at a family owned center in Canton, teaching as the Lead Toddler Teacher at a Montessori school, and most recently working as an ECE Teacher in the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.
I come from a very close family. My dad works as an engineer for Fiat Chrysler, and my mom writes poetry and was a homemaker. I am the oldest of 3 children. My sister and I are only 19 months apart and I am the proud Aunt/Godmother to her son Robbie, who I love very much. I also have a brother who is 7 years younger than me. I enjoy reading, writing my own stories, knitting, cross-stitch, painting and keeping active. Working with young children is my passion, and I love being able to assist families, and mentor other teachers in my role as Assistant Program Director. I feel very blessed to be able to have a career that I love!
